Black Quarterback – 2023 – Super Bowl LVIII Review and Reaction

By Brandon Simmons

There is no conspiracy…the Kansas City Chiefs have become a dynasty. The Kansas City Chiefs beat the San Francisco 49ers 26-21 in an overtime thriller to claim another Super Bowl. It was the 3rd Super Bowl in Mahomes’ stpried, but relatively young, career. The Chiefs QB threw for 333 yards, 2 touchdowns and 1 pick. His favorite target – Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce – had a quiet first half but had a strong 2nd half and finished the game with 9 catches for 93 yards. It was a game where the Niners tried everything in their will to stop the Chiefs but it wasn’t enough.

The San Francisco 49ers were a great team in the regular season but postseason and championships matter. The key to their downfall was not capitalizing on their advantages. With a team like the Kansas City Chiefs you can’t be conservative or lack execution, which is the case for this game. But the Niners could not build on their 10 point lead they made in the first half. Neither could they stop them from staying in the game in the 2nd half. In the 3rd quarter, it seemed like Niners running back Christian McCaffrey was non-existant in the gameplan and barely got any touches on the football. The team put their trust in 49ers QB Brock Purdy and, to an extent, he delivered, leading another late game drive. However, what really cost them is that missed extra point. If Moody makes that, then the game goes completely different. The Chiefs are not a team who you can make that mistake against. They are too good not take advantage of an opportunity like that, and that is exactly what happened.

The Kansas City Chiefs showed how much of a champion they really were tonight and why you should never bet against them. Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes had a rough start in the first half but came alive starting in the 2nd half. Mahomes threw a touchdown to wide receiver Montes Valdez-Scantling to take a lead earlier in the half. Two Harrison Butker FGs sent the game into overtime, where Mahomes was able to work his magic and deliver a strike to wide receiver Mecole Hardman, who was on the team last year, went to the New York Jets this year, but was traded for this past season. This was the theme of the Kansas City Chiefs all season: a rough start until it mattered. The Chiefs during the regular season were mediocre, but during the playoffs they looked like the Kansas City team that was the defending champs. In the first half, the Chiefs looked pedestrian, but in the 2nd half, when it mattered, they looked like themselves, which is hard for any team to beat. The 49ers really gave this team their all, but the Chiefs were able to outdo all of it. This was really a game where their playmakers showed up, even on defense. Chiefs defensive tackle Chris Jones had a key pressure that forced an incompletion in the red zone that prevented a touchdown. Mahomes was right to declare this team as a dynasty; back-to-back titles since the New England Patriots did it in 03-04 and their 3rd title in 5 years.
