My 3 Overreactions to the DeAndre Hopkins Trade

The Texans have been hit with a virus worse than this Corona shit…the BOBINCH, which stands for Bill O’Brien in Charge. If Houston’s new GM wanted to make an immediate impact, he definitely accomplished that by trading away the franchise’s other great receiver, DeAndre Hopkins for a 2nd and 4th round pick, as well as running back David Johnson. Needless to say, the internet tore him up. Since I was at work at the time, I couldn’t really dig into him myself but this evening I have time cuz

Fire Bill O’Brien Today

It seems wild since he just got this job, and I was not feeling the team firing the GM in the middle of last offseason, but this is far from fathomable. You have a young quarterback that is developing into one of the top signal-callers in the league. It’s ok to get him some help and Hopkins is as about as much help as any QB would need. But it’s not just today’s trade. The fans have not been happy with O’Brien’s decisions for a long time. There was an uproar when he traded away defensive end Jadeveon Clowney last preseason. He took a lot of heat for letting the team get beat by the Denver Broncos this past season, which may have cost the chance at getting a first round playoff bye. Of course, there was his most glaring blunder, blowing the 24 point lead to the Kansas City Chiefs in the divisional round this year and suffering a blowout loss.

It’s past the point of saying O’Brien has worn out his welcome. If anything, this is just Gary Kubiak with more division titles.  While B.O.B. has proven he can win the AFC South with any QB that you throw at him, his postseason performance has not warranted him any real trust as a head coach, so it obviously should not have prompted him to earn an executive position in which he is responsible for the building of  this team.

It’s Spooky Hours for the Offense

What is a Houston Texans offense going to look like with no DeAndre Hopkins? This team lost their only legit talent at the wide out position. Yes, they had Will Fuller, Kenny Stills and Keke Coutee; but neither of these guys were consistent enough to strike. If Coutee wasn’t hurt then he was benched; Stills was either hurt or disappeared throughout the game; Will Fuller’s last name almost was changed to “when healthy” anytime he was brought as a serious offensive threat. The Texans are also planning to depart with running back Carlos Hyde and Lamar Miller, their 1,000 yard rushers from the previous 2 seasons. That leaves last season’ backup running back, Duke Johnson and the newly acquired David Johnson, who was on his way to being pushed out of Arizona by running back Kenyon Drake, who the Cardinals acquired in a trade with Miami. While Deshaun Watson is a dynamic QB, he needs a little bit more at wide receiver. Perhaps a 2nd round pick could nab DHop’s future replacement, but unless the team adds another in free agency, it’s likely this unit will take a step back.

I Don’t Blame You for Jumping Ship I cringe at seeing a lot of Texans fans leaving the team for other fanbases; but I’m not mad at you. For over 20 years, this team has managed to not make one conference championship and it’s getting a little tiring. The expansion team tag has been done with for the longest time now; it’s time to put up some results that turn heads. The Texans can’t hide behind the fact they are the presumably up-and-coming team. The talent has gotten better, the games are getting bigger, the stakes re higher and the spotlight will only get brighter. Sadly, a lot of O’Brien’s mistakes have been stealing that shine. It seems there is a race within the national stage of the NFL’s public opinion, between those who glorify the accomplishments of Watson, as well as defensive end J.J. Watt and those who highlight the shortcomings of O’Brien. No fan wants to enjoy seeing their team get ridiculed in the national sports media over something that can not be defended. Personally, I want all the smoke, because I’ve emptied all of my emotions in this team on so any game days just to come back and do the same thing over. Still, I wouldn’t be mad if there were fans who were just all cried out at this moment.
